So I was polishing a handle the other day, and obviously used the wrong compound on the buff wheel: stag now has dark stuff in the pores.

What is a good way to remove it? Sand it down and re-polish - that might be extreme!

And what compound should I use for polishing on a wheel that will not stain?

Try cleaning it with the stuff that mechanics use to remove grease from their hands and a nailbrush. In England it is called Swarfega. The main ingredient of polishing compound is tallow, a heavy grease.

If that doesn't work, hand sand with 120 grit paper, then 400. Buff very lightly with green compound. You can fill open pores in stag with epoxy as long as they are clean. Then sand and buff.
