Trying to decide between bog-Macassar-Platan-micarta? What’s everyone think?

I have micarta and bog. Bog is my user, micarta is my abuser. I love the bog for its age, it makes it special. It is 4.600 year old wood....

I like all three but I think if I had to make the choice the bog would be it. It really depends on the pattern of the actual wood. Have you narrowed it down to a particular knife in each type of wood?

Probably better question would be any that I should stay away from. I have only had the micarta of the four in the past.

I have all three and wouldn’t say to stay away from any of them. I think you should just pick one that speaks to you.

My vote goes for striped platan. The other two never really grabbed my attention

I find some of the macassar quite striking; generally those with greater ribbons of lighter brown. The macassar that is mostly dark is not too enticing to me.

If I were buying sight unseen, I’d go for the bog oak. Even when bog is uniformly dark, I tend to like the grain structure quite a bit.

TLDR: If buying sight unseen, personally I’d pick bog oak. If picking and choosing, I’d find a light or ribbony magassar.

I never cared for the striped platan (except maybe in mnandis).

FA09ACA3-604B-47DF-8A70-FFABFE19A34B.jpeg There’s a striped platan and a box elder. Couple of my favorites. Like others have said, if you can see the actual knife your purchasing it’s much better because there are variants in the woods

I would choose the bog oak-it comes with a bit of a story :), which I always enjoy. In the end I am sure you will be happy with which ever you choose.

I know it’s not on your list, but I’d grab a Thuya Burl inlay while they’re still available.

You can’t go wrong with any of them! If you can see the actual examples that might make choosing a bit easier because one might have a pattern that calls to you.

It's all personal preference. If it makes any difference to you, the plantan is dyed black. The supplier makes several other colors available - blue, purple I think. I don't recall exactly, but after finding out it wasn't the natural color I personally lost interest. Between the three I'd vote for bog oak. My personal favorite of what's somewhat available is spalted beech. I believe it's from Denmark and natural variations in color from decay.
