Hi I'm new to the forum and new to buying knives I have just got a helle kletten and it has a small pit like imperfection on the blade I was wondering if this is just one of those little things that is oky or will it be any kind of problem. Like will it weaken the blade in anyway make is more susceptible to rust and such? [IMG]

be aware that any pit can potentially
    develop rust.
its severity depends on the steel.type
    and preventive measures
    undertsken in rusting.prevention.
    surface pits are dirt magnets.
but it wiil not affect blade usage.
    however, if left unattended,
things will fester. flush out all dirt and grime.
wash clean and dry throughly after every use.
corrosive elements are salt and water
this includes organic matter like blood
    and sap from vegetation.
    storage conditions matters.
be two steps ahead of humidity,
and dampness, its the hidden enemy.
long term storage in leather sheaths
    is not advisable.
you may use some surface protective formulas as added protection.
just be sure the surface area (especially
    pores) is entirely clean .
it would be tragic to seal in any harmful
matter still embedded on the surface.
pros swear by renaissance wax but it is expensive....

I think all this corrosion talk is overblown, I have SK-5 steel knife that I use on live wood and sometimes even food and so far I had no corrosion issues.

True, my knife is DLC coated, but coating is worn off from larger surface now, and there's still no issues. As long as you wipe your blade clean after use, and oil before storing you're good. Lip balm is usually very convenient to use for this purpose when you're on the go.

Just polish it out if it concerns you. Helle knives are made to be used, so I wouldn't worry about it otherwise.
