The knives are on an upper shelf. Without standing after opening it, all I could reach is the single bit Hoosier pattern axe I keep in it.

Not at all. That is fair game. In fact I had heard that before, it is embedded in our popular culture. That book is one that everybody has read, except for a few outliers like me; I have merely read about it. It is not the first time I have been befuddled in the last couple of days.
