I have been struggling to control my forging and normalizing temperatures. Well, not so much controlling, more judging temperature. Austentizing temp isn't too hard, but admittedly a bit inaccurate- just a bit brighter than non-magnetic. However, normalizing temps are much harder for a novice to judge. Forging temps are equally hard to judge, but the much larger range of working temperature makes it a bit more manageable. So, how can I get more accurate temps? Almost every steel temp/color chart varies a bit, and to further complicate the issue, varying ambient light makes it feel like chasing my tail. Living in "the land of the midnight sun" doesn't help much either. Have any of you used the "Thermal Light" app for i-phones? Do I need to cough up the money for a thermocouple setup on my forge? Any help y'all can offer would be greatly appreciated.
