Hi Foggy. My free hand technique is to lay the edge of the blade flat on my thumb nail.
I start sliding it back and forth at the same time I raise the back up until the edge starts to cut into the nail.
This is the angle which I sharpen. I start with 3-5 strokes each side. Later down to one stroke each side. I finish by stropping on my pant leg or cardboard, something of that medium. Finish it off by slicing some paper or shaving hair.

This is the method I learned when I was an Army Ranger back in the 80's.

Gently rub it in a circular motion on the sidewalk for 3 minutes each side. The higher the angle, the better.

Anyone think an IP check is in order?

Keep your rude, unhelpful comments in wine & cheese please, thanks. General knife discussion is not the place for it.

I think they’re just frustrated that someone asked for help but refused to read, watch or pay so.... why ask for help and request only experts reply! Lol

    Move long please.

Phil, don't let the rude comments get you down. I would check out the maintenance section of the forums for sharpening guides.

    Welcome to bladeforums!

Trolls don’t spot trolls very well I guess. Maybe one troll is the other troll.

Judging by registration dates and our lone dissenter's posting history, it's pretty likely.

Please direct your baseless accusations and attacks elsewhere.

There are many threads made for that sort of thing. This is not one of them.

Maybe we arent answering the actual question :

How does it need sharpening? Answer: because it is dull.
